This sports photographer had quite a few obstacles to over come when they took this photograph. First they had to have a really expensive telephoto lens, and from the looks of the picture it had to be somewhere in the range of 600mm to 1200mm. Next they had to be able to hold the camera steady which could be accomplished by using a monopod or a tripod as the lens required is very large and cumbersome. The photographer also had to use a very large aperture in order to create a shot with that shallow of a depth of field. They also required a fast shutter speed so they could freeze the ball so there was no motion blur. And perhaps the hardest thing of all to over come would be focusing on the ball. This must have caused the photographer to take a lot of photographs in order to get one that would please them. They could have also used a burst shot mode on their camera to take multiple frames as the ball was in the air to try and get the best one. Shutter speed of 1/8000th of a second and an aperture of 2.8 (because most big lenses cant open their aperture as far as a small lens could)
